"Red light therapy" is now used to describe everything from medical lasers to home LED panels and wraps.
There is legitimate clinical research on photobiomodulation (PBM) for knee osteoarthritis. But that does not mean every device that produces red light has been shown to treat an arthritic knee.

What is photobiomodulation?
Photobiomodulation uses non-ionizing red or near-infrared light to expose tissue to a defined light dose. Older studies may call it low-level laser therapy or low-level light therapy.
Research protocols specify variables such as:
- Wavelength.
- Light source, such as laser or LED.
- Power or irradiance.
- Energy delivered.
- Treatment time.
- Distance from the tissue.
- Number and location of treatment points.
- Number and frequency of sessions.
Those details are not technical trivia. They determine what treatment was actually tested.
What have knee-arthritis trials found?
Results are mixed.
A 2025 double-blind randomized trial enrolled people with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis and compared active photobiomodulation with sham and no treatment. The active protocol used a 790-nm laser, 4 joules at each of nine specified treatment points. The active group had greater improvement in pain and several clinical outcomes.
A larger 2023 double-blind placebo-controlled trial studied 127 people receiving a strengthening program. Adding active photobiomodulation to exercise did not improve pain, physical function, or quality of life more than exercise alone or exercise plus placebo PBM through follow-up.
Those two results can both be true. Different devices, doses, co-treatments, and study populations may produce different outcomes.
The current evidence supports further study and a possible symptom-relief effect with selected protocols. It does not support treating every red-light device as an established knee-arthritis treatment.
Is a home red-light panel the same treatment?
Not necessarily.
A consumer panel can look similar to a research device while delivering a very different light dose to the knee.

The FDA also treats photobiomodulation as a medical-device category while noting that some low-risk products intended only for general wellness may fall outside the same medical-device framework.
"FDA cleared," "medical grade," and "uses the same wavelength" are therefore not substitutes for evidence that the exact knee protocol has meaningful clinical benefit.
Does it regrow knee cartilage?
There is not good clinical evidence that red-light therapy predictably restores substantial lost cartilage or reverses established knee osteoarthritis.
Most useful human studies measure pain, stiffness, function, or quality of life.
Claims that a consumer light device will "regenerate the knee" should be judged much more cautiously than a limited claim that a defined PBM protocol may reduce symptoms.
Is it safe?
Photobiomodulation is noninvasive, and clinical knee studies generally report a low treatment burden.
Safety still depends on the device and how it is used. Eye precautions, photosensitivity, skin conditions, medications that increase light sensitivity, device heating, and manufacturer instructions can matter.
A home device should not delay evaluation of a knee that is newly hot, markedly swollen, unstable, injured, or rapidly worsening.
How to evaluate a device before spending money
Before buying a device because it is advertised for "red light therapy," look for information that can be compared with clinical research.
- What wavelengths does the device produce?
- What irradiance reaches the treatment area at the recommended distance?
- What total energy dose is delivered during a session?
- How large an area of the knee is treated?
- Is the proposed knee protocol based on a published human study?
- Was the exact device studied, or is the company borrowing evidence from a different laser or LED system?
- What is the return policy if the device is expensive and does not help?
- Is the company claiming pain relief, or making much stronger claims such as cartilage regeneration?
